The S.T.A.R.S Present SAT Prep Classes

Big Boys In Training

Prepare to succeed!!!!!!

Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions a young person can make. Students work hard to find a school that will match their academic, extracurricular, and social interests. Ideally, a student’s SAT score is a tool for impressing colleges, not an obstacle to be overcome. Many people do not” test well”. Frequently, anxiety interferes with giving your best performance. The S.T.A.R.S, know that practice builds confidence and understanding generates results. Our SAT preparation programs are individually designed to maximize improvements and help students realize their testing goals.

 The New SAT

The SAT has recently changed. Now called the SAT Reasoning Test, it evaluates a student’s critical thinking skills, challenging them to analyze and solve problems. Analogy questions have been eliminated, as have the quantitative comparison questions in math. The test now focuses on reading comprehension, writing, and mathematic concepts through Algebra II. In many ways, these changes are to the student’s advantage, as the test now more closely reflects formats commonly used in school.

 Test Structure

The SAT includes sections for Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing and takes a total of 3 hours and 45 minutes. The test begins with a 25-minute essay. Next, there are seven multiple-choice sections and one student generated “grid-in” section, each lasting 20- or 25-minutes. Finally, a 10-minute multiple choice writing section is administered last.

 Focused Approach

Today’s students are busier than ever. With academic, extracurricular, family and social demands, who has time for a long, “one size fits all” SAT preparation program? By evaluating a student’s strengths and needs, setting achievement goals, and individualizing instruction, The S.T.A.R.S helps students achieve more, in less time.

Program Design

The S.T.A.R.S SAT preparation approach builds students’ confidence and familiarity with the test structure and content. The program includes two full-length practice tests written by the publishers of the SAT itself. The initial test is used to assess students’ strengths and needs in four areas: writing, critical reading, mathematics and test-taking strategies. Students, parents and instructors then set improvement goals which guide the focus and duration of the program. A typical course of study consists of four two hour sessions; one session dedicated to each major test subject and another focusing on test strategy. Study sessions are followed by a post-test to determine whether the achievement goals were attained or additional sessions should be arranged. The SAT preparation program is available in both one-on-one and small group settings. In order to provide meaningful, individual attention, groups are limited to a maximum of 5 students.

Flexible Format

Meeting times are flexible in order to accommodate students’ busy schedules. Evening and weekend meetings are available. In order to maximize the productive time and eliminate unnecessary travel, sessions are usually conducted in-home. Alternatively, a convenient public meeting place such as a library or school can be arranged. Additionally, our individualized approach caters to the specific needs and learning style of each student. If a student needs more work in one topic than another, sessions will be adjusted accordingly. Instructors are available to schedule additional sessions as needed.
